Exploring interactive tactical media for public space, community engagement, and critical reflection.

The Tactical Interaction Project (TIP) is an ongoing research-creation initiative exploring how interactive digital media can reclaim urban space and invite public participation. Built around NODE-1 — a modular, bike-mounted display system — TIP functions as both a technical platform and a creative framework for participatory interventions.

NODE-1

Nomadic Open Display Engine 1


A mobile, battery-powered media platform built on a cargo bike trailer.

  • Display Options: Flatscreen TV (daytime) or short-throw projector (night/low light)
  • Power System: LiFePO4 12V 100Ah battery + 2000W inverter
  • Structure: Custom welded steel frame for modular mounting
  • Processing: MacBook Pro, Mac Mini or Raspberry Pi

NODE-1 is designed for flexibility, portability, and community use. The system can adapt to different urban contexts and support multiple forms of interaction — from public message walls to poetic, site-specific installations.

Demo Projects

MassCast

A live message wall for protests and public gatherings.

  • Participants scan a QR code to submit short text messages.
  • Messages appear in real time on NODE-1’s display, creating a shared, mobile public voice.
  • Built with HTML/CSS/JavaScript, Firebase backend, and “vibe coding” AI-assisted development.

Understanding What We Can Only Feel

A site-specific interactive experience designed for projection at Ontario Place.

  • Participants navigate a 3D point-cloud landscape of the site before redevelopment.
  • Inspired by hauntology and the concept of lost futures.
  • Created in TouchDesigner, using game mechanics for slow, contemplative interaction.

TIP is grounded in research-creation and critical making, merging artistic experimentation with political and social engagement. The project values:

  • DIY ethics and repurposing materials
  • Open-source documentation and sharing

Future Directions

TIP is open-ended and collaborative by design. Future plans include:

  • More interactive demos by other artists
  • Workshops and co-created public interventions
  • Off-grid upgrades like solar charging
  • Replication of NODE-1 in other cities
